How Green Can You Go?

This summer’s erratic weather and recent movies such as Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” have finally brought the topic of global warming into our day to day conversation.  While many of us sound off about the impact of man’s negligence on mother earth, few of us take real steps to rectify the situation.  Although many of us would like to do more, we have been lead to believe that we would need to compromise our standard of living in order to live a “green” life.  Luckily there are people in our world who are quietly dedicated to making changes that can have real impact on the betterment of our environment and our children’s future.

One example is Bill Harrington, who moved his construction business from Florida to Charlotte, North Carolina in 2005.  As builders in the Charlotte area continue to tear down centuries old forests, Bill has taken a different approach.  He became licensed as a general contractor with an unlimited classification in the State of North Carolina and began to focus on North Carolina Healthy Built Homes. With advancements in building technology and the belief that we should always strive to better ourselves and our products, Harrington Construction, Inc. has taken the initiative to be a leader in sustainable/green/energy efficient construction, which has lead to the concept of High Performance Green construction.  According to Bill, “We wholeheartedly believe, as a company, that we can build a better, healthier, safer, and more efficient product, not only for our customer, but for our environment, and we can do this at very reasonable construction costs.”

Harrington Construction has recently completed a “green” home located in Belmont, North Carolina in a subdivision called Misty Waters.  It was built from the ground up as a high performance, passive solar residence.  It is certified as “North Carolina Healthy Built”, with a silver certification, and is an energy star certified home.  Not only is this house energy efficient, saving the owner up to 50% on their utility bill, but it is a beautiful and spacious Craftsman style home.  It has four bedrooms, 3 full baths and 2 half baths sitting on 1.35 acres in a gated water community.

Great care was taken in the site orientation of the house, including a tree preservation plan, proper solar orientation for passive solar heating and cooling, and windows designed to take advantage of prevailing winds and cross ventilation.  Part of Bill’s planning for the correct placement of the house involved studying the way homes were built in the past before we were reliant on modern day utilities when the homes had to depend on the direction the sun struck the house and windows for warmth in the winter and cooling in the summer.  Large front and back porches give a view of a beautiful lot with mature trees and a creek with seasonal water view.

We need to ask ourselves why aren’t more builders producing energy efficient, green homes?  Bill has proved that you don’t have to sacrifice comfort, convenience, the size of a home, or incur exorbitant costs, to have an environmentally conscious living space.

If you would like to view this home and/or learn more details about green construction, please call Harrington Construction, Inc. at (704) 542-0068, or Daniel Papandrea at (704) 904-5334.
